IDT Audio System Tray Application has Encountered a problem and needs to close.

Somewhere between the Dell Dimension series of E-310 to 5100 (and possibly beyond) an extremely obnoxious sound driver error is causing PC owners and techs to pull their hair out.

Chances are, if you've formatted and reinstalled Windows XP on your Dell Dimension computer and a Sigmatel Audio driver was needed, you'll see this.

There are plenty of forums out there talking about this same topic. Simply search for it on Google and you'll be sure to see messages from desperate computer users who have recently restored their system and now run into the "IDT Audio System Tray Application Encountered a problem and needs to close" message upon boot up.

The sound works perfectly, but the error is still there. The only way to get rid of the error seems to be when you disable the audio driver. If you watch closely, you'll notice an icon in the task bar that pops in and out. That little icon is the problem. Thankfully there is a quick fix for this error problem.

YOU STILL NEED THE SIGMATEL IDT AUDIO DRIVER

You might have uninstalled your audio driver. If so, the Sigmatel Audio driver can be downloaded from Dell Drivers & Downloads. Be sure and select the correct Dell Dimension PC Model and Opperating System (the link is for Dell Dimension 5100).

Once the driver is installed and working, restart your computer to make sure that the audio continues to work (note the start up and shut down sounds). If the annoying error message "IDT Audio System Tray Application Encountered a problem and needs to close" keeps popping up, then follow these simple steps to get rid of it.

Run a search for sttray within the entire computer (sttray.exe). Once you have located sttray, you'll notice that it's icon resembles a music symbol (which means you've found the right one). Simply rename the sttray.exe file/application to something else (such as sttray123.exe). - or just sttray123 if the ".exe" does not show.

After that, simply restart your computer and the error message should stop completely.Although this method works for most users, there are other options available if the problem/error messages continue. Such as:
  • Go to the Start Menue and selct Run. Type in msconfig. Select the tab Services and find the service whos manufacturer is "IDT" and deselect it.
  • Search for "IDT" and delete the entire folder.
  • Go to your system's DEVICE MANAGER, locate your sound driver and rollback to the last driver (available if you have a previous driver available).

    This problem has been noticed on Dell Dimension models E-310, 2100, 2200, 2300, 2300LE 2350, 2400, 3000, 3100, 4100, 4200, 4300, 4300S, 4400, 4500, 4500S, 4550, 4600, 4600C, 4700, 4700 MCE, 5000, 5100, 5200C, 5150, 5150C, 8100, 8200, 8250, 8300, 8400 and 8400 MCE.

Hopefully we have been able to solve this error once and for all.
